Tactical Improvement

  • Target large margins: Aim at least three feet inside the baseline and sidelines to reduce unforced errors.

  • Recover to the middle: Return to the center of the opponent's available hitting angles immediately after every shot.

  • Attack the short ball: Move forward aggressively whenever your opponent hits a weak ball that lands near the service line.

  • Exploit opponent weaknesses: Identify if your opponent has a weaker backhand or poor movement, and feed them those balls.

Physical and Technical Mastery

  • Keep your head still: Do not look up early to see where your shot is going. Keep your head down through contact.

  • Improve your footwork fitness: Do ladder drills and side-to-side spider drills to increase your court coverage speed.

  • Record your match play: Film your practice sets to spot technical flaws and positioning errors you cannot feel while playing.

Effective Practice Habits

  • Play with purpose: Never just mindlessly hit balls. Dedicate every practice session to improving one specific skill.

  • Play competitive points: Supplement your drilling with real sets to build mental toughness and learn how to win ugly (making it work with how you’re playing).
