Mason’s Tips for Tennis Success

Every month, Mason shares practical advice to help you play smarter and win more points. This August, Mason focuses on high percentage tennis, a strategy that increases your chances of success by focusing on reliable, effective shots.

Mason’s Tip

Use crosscourt groundstrokes to control the rally. This shot offers a larger target area and clears the lowest part of the net, making it less likely to go out of bounds. Practicing this shot will help you keep the ball in play and force your opponent to move more.

Mason’s Competitive Corner: Five Tips to Increase Your Winning Points Percentage

  1. Crosscourt Groundstrokes

Aim your groundstrokes diagonally across the court. This shot has a longer net distance and a bigger landing area, reducing errors and keeping your opponent on the move.

  2. Hit to the Middle of the Court

Target the center to limit your opponent’s angles. This reduces their chances of hitting winners and forces them into more predictable shots.

  3. Vary Your Pace

Change the speed of your shots by mixing slower balls with faster ones. This disrupts your opponent’s timing and rhythm, making it harder for them to anticipate your next move.

  4. Use Topspin

Adding topspin helps keep the ball deep and adds margin for error. It makes the ball bounce higher, pushing your opponent back and giving you more control over the rally.

  5. Play to Your Opponent’s Weakness

Identify your opponent’s weaker side, often their backhand, and consistently target it. This forces errors and creates opportunities for you to take control of the point.

Applying these tips during your matches will help you play smarter, reduce unforced errors, and increase your chances of winning points.

August is a great time to get involved with tennis, whether through competitive teams, local leagues, or social events. Take the step to join the Texas Cup Tennis team or the Fall Austin Tennis League, and don’t miss the social event at Pins on August 30th. Meanwhile, use Mason’s tips to improve your game and enjoy every moment on the court.
